Le temps des cerises

Through the kitchen window, I saw a cheeky squirrel feeding on the first ripe fruit of our cherry trees today. The other day, some blackbirds were at them, too. Looking more closely, I could already see many of them devoured by our animal friends. Familiar story. Before the cherries get ready for picking, it’s usually the birds that come in great flocks and peck the lot! Interestingly, the cherries seem to be well ahead of time this year. Last year, it wasn’t until the middle of August that the trees were heavy with the red fruit. Must be the effect of a much warmer June.

Last year was exceptional, though. There were considerably more cherries than usual. In addition, it was a very good wild blueberry year in the forests, and they were ripe at the same time. There were speculations then that the birds were happy with the forest berries and left people’s gardens alone. And I was happy, managing to make several jars of Amaretto-spiced cherry jam. Looks like this year I should be pleased to get one or two, if that! Oh well, such is life. Nice sight, against the sun-lit blue sky in any case.

  1. I love the wild blueberries. The black bears like them too 🙂

  2. Amaretto spiced cherry jam – sounds delicious! Perhaps you could post the recipe when you have time! We have four bird feeders in our garden with nuts, sunflower seeds, etc and they are all in supposedly squirrel proof containers but sometimes I see them munching away through my kitchen window so now we have to grease the pole as well!!

    • Thanks for your comment! Sure, I’ll post the recipe one of these days. We have a few squirrels around our house and they get into anything! We have a nice glass-cube Danish design bird feeder in the garden that we thought was definitely squirrel-proof, only to be proven wrong last winter. • Oh my goodness! What an amazing photo! Do you always get red squirrels, we only have grey here. There are only a couple of places in England with red squirrels, both National Trust reserves. Husband is now watching European Cup Final with Finnish commentary – he will have to concentrate hard!!!

      • Yes, it’s only red squirrels here. I’ve heard the grey ones are quite problematic in Britain. Oh dear, Finnish commentary must be so boring! We are not into football much, so not watching the final here. Let the best team win 🙂

  3. I will look for that recipe too… Here in Canada we have a variety of squirrels, depending on location. At home we have the black, and grey, but here at the cottage, we also have those pesky red squirrels.

    • Thank you for your comment! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a black squirrel, sounds intriguing! Our red ones are mostly quite cute and entertaining but they do steal bird food even from the most unusual places!
